On October 24, 2026, at IDWeek 2026 in Washington, D.C., Innoviva Specialty Therapeutics presented new analysis showing that zoliflodacin (Nuzolvence) keeps high cure rates for uncomplicated urogenital gonorrhea in patients who also have chlamydia. Contagion Live previewed the data on October 23. Nearly one in four participants in the urogenital evaluable population tested positive for Chlamydia trachomatis, and gonorrhea cure rates were similar regardless of chlamydia status. Investor coverage from Simply Wall St adds the clinical catch: chlamydia still needs separate treatment.
Why It Matters
For the sexual-health economy, the important word is **oral**. Today's U.S. standard of care for gonorrhea requires an intramuscular ceftriaxone injection, which keeps treatment tied to clinics. A single-dose pill is the missing piece for **true test-and-treat telehealth**: the at-home kit, e-visit or app-based model that has been finding more infections (see [Kaiser's 979,557-patient e-visit study](/stories/kaiser-sti-evisit-testing-study)) but had to send gonorrhea-positive patients to a clinic for a shot. The co-infection data removes a reason for clinicians to hesitate. It also confirms the workflow will need **two prescriptions**, zoliflodacin plus doxycycline for chlamydia, which affects how platforms build their treatment flows. Simply Wall St frames the U.S. launch as a second-half-2026 event aimed at a 1.0–1.5 million-patient market. This comes as European regulators [warn against broad doxyPEP use for gonorrhea](/stories/europe-sti-surge-boots-gonorrhoea-vaccine) because of resistance, which makes a new antibiotic class more valuable and also something to use carefully. Some context. The FDA approved zoliflodacin in December 2025 as a first-in-class, single-dose oral antibiotic for uncomplicated urogenital gonorrhea in adults and adolescents 12 and older weighing at least 35 kg. In the global Phase 3 trial, 930 participants were randomized 2:1 to one 3 g oral dose of zoliflodacin or the standard regimen of a ceftriaxone 500 mg injection plus 1 g oral azithromycin. Urogenital cure rates were 90.9% (460/506) for zoliflodacin and 96.2% (229/238) for the comparator, which met the prespecified 12% non-inferiority margin. 235 of 923 (25%) participants had chlamydia co-infection. The comparator arm included azithromycin, which also treats chlamydia, so the open question was whether co-infection would weaken zoliflodacin given on its own. The new analysis says it does not. "Antimicrobial resistance remains one of the most urgent global health challenges, requiring continued innovation and rigorous evidence generation," said Innoviva CMO Dr. David Altarac.
