On July 27, 2026, TD Bank Group committed $1 million to the Sinai Health Foundation to expand a study examining whether menopausal hormone therapy can treat menopause-related migraines and cognitive symptoms — including the brain fog that dominates patient self-reports and has almost no evidence-backed treatment behind it. The research runs at Mount Sinai Hospital's Weston and O'Born Centre for Mature Women's Health in Toronto, one of the few academic centres in North America dedicated specifically to menopause and mature women's health, which sees more than 2,500 women annually.
Why It Matters
A million dollars is not a large research grant. What makes this worth logging is the funder. Menopause research has historically been financed by public health agencies, pharma with a product to license, or femtech startups with an obvious commercial interest in the answer. A retail bank writing a cheque for neuroimaging studies of brain fog is a signal about where menopause sits in the corporate consciousness — closer to a workforce and customer-base issue than to a niche clinical topic. The commercial context sharpens the point. Bonafide's sixth annual State of Menopause survey, released July 15, 2026, found anxiety, depression and panic attacks were the most disruptive symptoms reported by symptomatic women aged 40–64, with 60% citing mental health impacts and 50% reporting cognitive decline. The workplace data in that same survey was stark: 56% reported a motivation decline, 48% an income drop, and only 7% were aware of any menopause accommodations available to them. Employers are staring at an attrition and productivity problem in their most experienced female cohort, and there is currently no product to buy that fixes it — the supplement and device markets are built around vasomotor symptoms and vaginal health because those are the symptoms with tractable interventions. That is the arbitrage. Cognitive and mood symptoms are the most disruptive and the least commercially served. If MHT shows a defensible effect on migraines and cognition under imaging and neuropsych testing, it opens a treatment pathway — and, more importantly for the sector, a *claims* pathway — that the entire menopause category currently lacks. Watch for the results to be cited quickly by hormone telehealth platforms, whose current marketing on cognition is carefully hedged for exactly the reason this study exists.The evidentiary gap the money targets is real and well documented. Up to 62% of women experience cognitive changes during the menopause transition, yet evidence-based treatments remain scarce — clinicians are largely left offering reassurance and off-label improvisation. The Sinai study will use brain imaging and neuropsychological testing to evaluate whether MHT can safely improve migraine symptoms and cognitive function, with the stated goal of laying groundwork for more personalised menopause care rather than the current one-size protocol.
Dr Marie Christakis, study co-lead and clinical lead at the Weston and O'Born Centre, framed the problem as a research deficit with downstream human cost: "Historic gaps in research have left women without effective treatment options, perpetuating avoidable suffering. Our work aims to unlock insights that can meaningfully improve cognitive health and brain function in women throughout the menopause transition." Anna Iacobelli, Senior Vice President for TD Bank Group's Metro West Region, kept the corporate framing plain: "Menopause affects millions of women, yet too many continue to navigate it without enough support."
