The company was founded by Dr. James Flewellen and Prof. Teuta Pilizota and is commercializing research out of the University of Edinburgh's Centre for Engineering Biology, building on earlier work backed by the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre.

Sexual function, libido, arousal and pain are all downstream of endocrine signals that current medicine measures once and then guesses about. Continuous hormone data is the missing input layer for a lot of what sexual wellness currently sells on vibes — the perimenopause supplement, the arousal cream, the desire telehealth consult. Kāhu's sensor is designed to track hormone levels continuously across the day, building a picture of how they shift in response to sleep, stress, nutrition and the menstrual cycle rather than capturing a single value at a single blood draw. "Hormones play a fundamental role in health, but we still have limited visibility into how they change throughout our lives and how those fluctuations relate to disease," Flewellen said. The company says the funding will also support team expansion and new research and clinical partnerships. Prior backing has come from Scottish Enterprise, Innovate UK, Silicon Catalyst UK and the Roslin Institute Campus Innovation Account.

The notable structural detail is who wrote the cheque. SPRIN-D is Germany's high-risk, high-reward public innovation agency — the state funding a Scottish university spinout's women's-health pivot is a small but real signal about where European public money is willing to go on femtech hardware, at a moment when private Series A capital in the category is widely described as bottlenecked.

Kāhu joins a crowded and increasingly well-capitalized continuous-hormone-monitoring field. As Femtech Insider noted, Eli Health is running rapid at-home saliva tests, Perperity Health is measuring hormones in sweat, Mira works from urine, and Clair Health — which raised $11.6M in June 2026 — is bringing a wrist-worn monitor to market this fall. All of them are chasing the same prize: a diagnostic standard for conditions where hormonal fluctuation is the mechanism but single-point testing is the only tool, including endometriosis, PCOS, perimenopause and infertility.
