It is philanthropic capital pointed at a discovery-stage biology problem with no near-term commercial return — the kind of bet VCs structurally cannot make and the kind of gap that the sector's funding data keeps exposing. Context matters here. Femtech's summer 2026 tally ran roughly $98 million across a dozen small rounds, with only three above $10 million, and the UK's decade-long 194% growth still lands at an average deal size of £1.9 million. Against that backdrop, a single up-to-$35M non-dilutive commitment from a foundation reshapes the top of the table — and it lands the same week the Gates Foundation granted roughly €811,000 to Uppsala spinout Readily Diagnostics for a point-of-care STI test, suggesting a coordinated push into underfunded reproductive and sexual health rather than a one-off. The AI angle is worth watching skeptically. "Agentic AI for target discovery" is a claim currently attached to a great many biotech balance sheets, and the proof will be validated biomarkers, not platform language. But preeclampsia is a genuinely good test case: high burden, poor mechanistic understanding, and — because it is placenta-specific — a tissue-level biology that a proteome-scale search plausibly has something new to say about.

The scientific premise is that conventional drug discovery has been searching an incomplete map. ProFound's thesis is that the human proteome is substantially larger than the canonically characterized set of proteins, and that undiscovered proteins hold untapped drug targets. Under the Gates-backed program, the company will analyze novel proteins from that expanded proteome as expressed in the placenta and serum of women diagnosed with preeclampsia and eclampsia, examine the causal biology behind emerging targets, and work to identify and validate both biomarkers and protein drug candidates. It also plans to build an AI tool specifically focused on the two conditions, combining its biological datasets with its agentic AI stack.

The disease burden justifies the attention. Per the company, preeclampsia and eclampsia affect an estimated 10 million women globally each year and contribute to approximately 76,000 maternal deaths. Therapeutic options remain limited, and the underlying biology is poorly understood — delivery of the placenta is still the only definitive treatment.

The Gates Foundation's own framing came from Herbert "Skip" Virgin, M.D., Ph.D., who heads its AI-Enabled Cures Frontier Accelerator: "Conditions like preeclampsia and eclampsia remain chronically underdiagnosed and undertreated. With only about 1% of global healthcare R&D directed toward female-specific conditions beyond cancer, promising treatments can take over a decade to reach the women who need them most. Closing that gap is a core commitment of the Gates Foundation."
