On October 12, 2026, the Wall Street Journal first reported, and Reuters confirmed via a source, that Bumble is in advanced talks to be taken private by Ithaca Holdings in a deal valuing the dating-app operator at roughly $1 billion. Ithaca is a recently founded holding company for technology businesses set up by Silicon Valley executives Ravi Gupta and John Hegeman. Bumble shares jumped about 50% to around $3.80 on the report, from a market value of roughly $389 million at the prior close (Reuters; Yahoo Finance put the pre-news market cap near $335 million). Neither Bumble nor Ithaca commented. Reuters had reported earlier this year that Bumble was exploring a sale.
Why It Matters
The "intimacy economy" is splitting. Mass-market swipe apps are losing paying users. Meanwhile niche and identity-driven platforms are growing and making money: [Feeld grew revenue about 30% and paid a record dividend](/stories/feeld-record-dividend-revenue-jump), and Grindr is turning itself into a [sexual-health company](/stories/grindr-purposemed-freddie-250m). A $1B take-private for the brand that defined women-first dating is the market saying that general-purpose dating is now a turnaround asset. Match CEO Spencer Rascoff's comments to Yahoo Finance spell out the threat: people forming "pseudo-relationships" with AI, which is the [AI-companion market](/stories/sydney-ai-porn-ourdream-candy-ai) we cover from the other side. For sexual-wellness brands, dating apps have been one of the few large, adult, consent-forward audiences willing to carry partnerships (Bumble has historically been more cautious than Feeld or Grindr). A privately held Bumble under a tech-operator owner may lean harder on monetisation. Possible routes include premium tiers, IRL events, and AI matchmaking. Whether that ever extends to sexual-health integrations of the kind Grindr is pursuing is an open question. Watch for a definitive agreement, a go-shop period, and whether Wolfe Herd stays. The reported price is far below Bumble's peak. Yahoo Finance's Brian Sozzi notes that the company was valued at about $14 billion around its 2021 IPO. The fundamentals explain the drop. Per Reuters, paying users fell more than 11% in 2025 to about 3.7 million and annual revenue fell nearly 10% to about $966 million. In Q2 2026, paying users dropped 16.4% to 3.2 million. Yahoo Finance adds that Q2 revenue fell 15.2% and adjusted operating profit fell to $72.9 million from $94.6 million. Founder Whitney Wolfe Herd returned as CEO in 2025 and has since rolled out AI features and ended Bumble's signature "women message first" rule. Rival Match Group, meanwhile, is close to returning Tinder to daily-active-user growth, and its Hinge brand grew 22% last quarter.

It's a deal, and it's bigger than the leak. On October 13, 2026, Bumble announced a definitive agreement to be acquired by Ithaca Holdings in an all-cash deal that values the company at $1.3 billion, above the roughly $1 billion reported a day earlier. Class A shareholders get $6.05 a share, which Bumble says is about a 138% premium to the unaffected October 9 close and about 119% above the 30-day volume-weighted average price. The stock rose about 56% to around $5.94 in Tuesday trading (24/7 Wall St.), close to the deal price, which suggests the market sees little risk of the deal failing.
The vote is effectively done. An independent Special Committee chaired by Ann Mather ran the process. After the agreement was signed, affiliates of Blackstone and founder Whitney Wolfe Herd approved it by written shareholder consent, which provides the required approval without a contested vote. Wolfe Herd recused herself from the board's deliberations. When the deal closes, Ithaca co-founders Ravi Gupta and John Hegeman become co-CEOs of Bumble, and Wolfe Herd says she "will remain actively involved." Bumble will stay in Austin and will not hold a Q3 earnings call; the 10-Q is due by November 9. Advisers: Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley for the committee, and Kirkland & Ellis with KKR Capital Markets for Ithaca.
Read-through. Ithaca describes itself as applying "frontier technology to renew and accelerate businesses," and Gupta and Hegeman called the deal "a bet on the future of humanity." In practice, that means AI-driven matchmaking under private ownership, away from quarterly scrutiny of paying-user numbers. The original thesis holds: mass-market swipe apps are being repriced as turnaround assets while niche intimacy platforms grow. The open questions are now about strategy, not whether the deal closes.
